Safety Comparison

Both the Taurus and the Continental have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available collision warning systems, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty Comparison

There are over 4 times as many Ford dealers as there are Lincoln dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Taurus’ warranty.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the Taurus gets better fuel mileage than the Continental:

2.0 turbo 4 cyl./6-spd. Auto

20 city/29 hwy

3.5 V6/6-spd. Auto

18 city/27 hwy

17 city/26 hwy

3.7 V6/Auto

17 city/24 hwy

16 city/24 hwy

3.7 V6/Auto

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford Taurus uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. engine for maximum performance). The Continental requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Taurus has a gallon more fuel capacity than the Continental (19 vs. 18 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

The Taurus SHO’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Continental are solid, not vented.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Taurus has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Continental’s suspension doesn’t offer front gas-charged shocks.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Taurus is 2.1 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than on the Continental.

Chassis Comparison

The Ford Taurus may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 250 pounds less than the Lincoln Continental.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Taurus has .4 inches more front hip room, .1 inches more rear headroom, 1 inch more rear hip room and 1 inch more rear shoulder room than the Continental.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Taurus has a much larger trunk than the Continental (20.1 vs. 16.7 cubic feet).
