Safety Comparison

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Ford Flex are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Chevrolet Traverse doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The middle row seatbelts optional on the Flex inflate when a collision is detected, helping to spread crash forces over a much larger area of the body and limiting head and neck movement. This can help prevent spinal and internal injuries. The Traverse doesn’t offer inflatable seatbelts.

Both the Flex and the Traverse have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front-wheel drive, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available collision warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty Comparison

The Flex’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Traverse’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Reliability Comparison

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Flex has a standard 650-amp battery. The Traverse’s 600-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Flex’s reliability 14 points higher than the Traverse.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2017 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Chevrolet vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 2 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chevrolet is ranked 6th.

Engine Comparison

The Flex’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6 produces 32 more horsepower (287 vs. 255) than the Traverse RS’ standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The Flex Limited’s optional 3.5 turbo V6 produces 55 more horsepower (365 vs. 310) and 84 lbs.-ft. more torque (350 vs. 266) than the Traverse’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Flex Limited is faster than the Chevrolet Traverse V6:

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

The Flex has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Traverse doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

The Flex’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Traverse are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

The Flex SEL’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Traverse’s standard 65 series tires. The Flex’s optional tires have a lower 45 series profile than the Traverse LT Leather/RS/Premier/High Country’s 55 series tires.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Flex has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Traverse’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Flex’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Traverse doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The Flex’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (54.4% to 45.6%) than the Traverse’s (56.6% to 43.4%). This gives the Flex more stable handling and braking.

Chassis Comparison

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Flex Limited AWD is quieter than the Traverse High Country AWD:

Passenger Space Comparison

The Flex has .5 inches more front headroom, 1.6 inches more front legroom, .5 inches more rear headroom, 5.9 inches more rear legroom and .5 inches more third row headroom than the Traverse.

Flexibility is maximized at the game, campground or a drive-in theatre in the Flex Limited when its optional tailgating rear seats are deployed, allowing people to sit facing out of the liftgate. (Do not use while vehicle is in motion.) The Traverse doesn’t offer tailgating seats.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Flex has a standard third row seat which folds flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Traverse doesn’t offer seats that fold into the floor.

Pressing a switch automatically lowers the Flex’s second and third row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Traverse doesn’t offer automatic folding second row seats.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Flex. The Traverse doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Flex’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Traverse’s standard power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully. The Traverse LT/RS/Premier/High Country’s front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

The Flex SE/SEL’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Traverse’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted. The Flex Limited’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield.

The Flex Limited’s optional Active Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Traverse doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Economic Advantages Comparison

Insurance will cost less for the Flex owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the Flex with a number “5” insurance rate while the Traverse is rated higher at a number “10” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Flex is less expensive to operate than the Traverse because it costs $405 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Flex than the Traverse, including $135 less for front brake pads, $132 less for fuel injection, $129 less for a fuel pump, $23 less for front struts and $295 less for a timing belt/chain.

Recommendations Comparison

The Flex was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” for 2 of the last 10 years. The Traverse has never been an “All Star.”
